How to Improve Education and Reducing Inequality through KIP

Smart Indonesia Card (KIP) is an initiative of the Indonesian government under the Smart Indonesia Program (PIP) designed to increase standard education in Indonesia by giving financial help to students from poor families. Launched in 2014 by President Joko Widodo, KIP aims to ensure children from backgrounds behind the economy can access quality education. This program targets children ages 6-21 years old​ who are not going to school and expands the benefits of non-formal education.

Main Features of KIP

The beneficiaries of this program are children from poor families, including orphans, children from family participants of the Family Hope Program (PKH), and those affected by a disaster. This program also supports children who have a physical disability and those who follow non-formal education such as the Center Study Society and institutions course.

  • Financial Assistance: The amount of help depends on the level of education. Participants Elementary school students receive IDR 450,000 per year, middle school students IDR 750,000, and high school students IDR 1,000,000 per year.
  • Distribution and Impact: Since its launch, the distribution of KIP has been expanded throughout Indonesia. This program has shown an impact significant positive​ on the continuity of education in Indonesia. For example, the percentage of permanent KIP recipients who go to school is higher than non-recipients and shows the effectiveness of the program in reducing the number of separated schools.

Challenges and Improvements

Although it has been successful, this program faces challenges like ensuring recipients target appropriate benefits and managing funds appropriately​ and effectively to prevent abuse. Medium effort was made to increase data alignment between national and local databases to improve targeting and delivery benefits. Monitoring, adjusting, and implementing continuously are very important for overcoming challenges and expanding program reach.

KIP is very important in increasing the chance of education for Lots child, possibly children from backgrounds not capable of continuing education and aspiring for a brighter future​​ by overcoming inequality in education. KIP contributes in a way, significantly to the development Indonesian socio-economic whole.
