Chronology of Events

Brazilian Climber Falls

Juliana Marins started the climb to Mount Rinjani with six of her colleagues and a local guide. They chose the Sembalun route and started their journey on Saturday, June 21, in the early morning. However, when they reached the Cemara Nunggal point, Juliana felt exhausted and asked to rest for a while. The guide decided to ask Juliana to wait there while he and five other climbers continued their journey to the summit.

After some time, Juliana did not catch up with the group. This worried the guide, so he returned to the previous resting point to look for Juliana, but she was not there. The guide then saw a flashlight from the bottom of the ravine leading to Segara Anak Lake, which he suspected was from Juliana, who had fallen. The incident was immediately reported to local authorities, and search efforts began immediately.

Difficulties Faced by the SAR Team

After the report was received at around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, the SAR team was immediately deployed to conduct the search. They brought vertical rescue equipment and tried to reach the location with very steep terrain. However, bad weather and thick fog slowed down the search process.

The SAR team finally arrived at Post 4 at 12.00 WITA, but the evacuation was hampered by bad weather. On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, confirmed that Juliana was presumed dead based on the results of a search using a thermal drone.

Found After Long Search

After a long and difficult search, the SAR team finally managed to find Juliana’s body on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at a depth of about 600 meters from the initial point of the fall.

For climbers planning to climb Mount Rinjani or other mountains, let’s be more cautious and always prioritize safety. Ensure you do sufficient physical preparation, utilize an experienced local guide, and adhere to the advice and regulations provided by local authorities. Do not hesitate to stop if you feel tired or encounter dangerous conditions.
